Thanksgiving

Sunday, November 30, 2008

We had a very happy Thanksgiving! Bob and I were lucky enough to spend Thanksgiving with my parents and my youngest sister, Katie. We got to Lovell late Monday night. We spent Tuesday helping my Mom put up Christmas decorations outside. As Bob said before our trip, "It's not Thanksgiving at the Bassett's, if we're not putting up Christmas lights." I have a wonderful husband ;). We had a good time eating pizza and watching a movie on Wednesday. Thanksgiving day was relaxing. We sat down to a beautiful Thanksgiving feast prepared by my Mom and discussed all that we are thankful for. After dinner, we drove out to the Dryhead Ranch, and we saw wild turkeys on Thanksgiving day! How cool is that?! I know, for real!!! We had to leave bright and early Friday morning at 6:00 AM, so Bob could be to work on Black Friday. Thank you Mom and Dad for the great Thanksgiving. We truly enjoyed the vacation.

Family Mission Statement

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

I was required to read The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Families by Stephen Covey for one of my college courses. After reading the book and taking the class, I learned the value of creating a family mission statement. Bob and I have written a family mission statement, and I recently got a cute magnet board to display our mission statement. We slowly developed our mission statement during a series of Family Home Evening lessons. I think that our mission statement will always be a work in progress and will evolve as our family grows and changes. I think that having a family mission statement provides the opportunity for families to solidify their purpose and goals which may help to improve determination and accountability.

Stephen Covey says that "... a family mission statement is a combined, unified expression from all family members of what your family is all about and the principles you choose to govern your family life". To start your own mission statement, visit

This is simply an idea that I thought was worth sharing. I do highly recommend The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Families. Give it a try!

Our Halloween

Monday, November 3, 2008

Happy Halloween! I know that I'm a little late, but Bob has been monopolizing the computer. He has been working hard on his Portfolio which is similar to a Master thesis. Bob turned in a complete draft to his committee today, and his defense is on November 13th. Good luck, baby-cakes!

Anyway, back to our Halloween. I made an effort to celebrate the holiday by first sprucing up our front doorway. You can't have Halloween without carving pumpkins. Bob especially loves to carve pumpkins. I think he is a master pumpkin carver, but he was disappointed with his handy work this year. He may have been too ambitious by selecting an image with a lot of detail. It was a good time regardless. We also went to a Halloween block party at Uncle Mike and Aunt Juli's house. It was fun to get out and mingle with family and friends!
